Download JAVA 6 Now

Link to Sun Java

Although this site no longer uses JAVA, the Region V website does, as do many other sites on the Internet. JAVA is an important part of your browsing experience. As such, you must have the appropriate JAVA plug-in for your browser.

In past years, Microsoft developed their own virtual machine to run JAVA elements. This virtual machine was installed when you installed Windows and was updated automatically during a Windows update. Although you can continue to use the current virtual machine, it is no longer supported by MS. However, all recent installations of JAVA now support Internet Explorer directly. You should download Sun's JAVA Run-time Environment (JRE) for proper support of JAVA enhanced websites under MSIE.

If you use the Opera web browser, you can download it with or without the JAVA plug-in. If you download it without the plug-in, you will also need to install JAVA. Since JAVA is browser independent, you can download the same JRE as you would download for IE.

Mozilla-based browsers typically include JAVA support.  If you use Mozilla, Netscape, Firefox or other browsers based on the Gecko engine, it is usually unnecessary to download this plug-in to view this site.  However, installation of the latest JAVA plug-in will provide greater functionality for your Mozilla-based browser.

The Java Plug-in Software supports all Windows platforms. Versions are also available for various UNIX-like operating systems including Linux.

INSTRUCTION FOR DOWNLOAD AND INSTALLATION

  1. If you have installed an earlier version of the JAVA JRE or the JAVA SDK, you should uninstall it first.  Do so by going to the Windows control panel and double clicking on the Add/Remove Programs icon.  Select JAVA and click the Add/Remove button.  Close the dialogue when you are done.
  2. Click on the link above to go to the JAVA download page. Select the proper JAVA Download. For most people, this is a file named something similar to jre-6u10-rc2-bin-b32-windows-i586-p-12_sep_2008.exe. Download into a temporary directory. (NOTE: Unless you are a programmer and plan on developing JAVA applications, most users only need the Run-time version (JRE), the SDK version is the Software Development Kit.)
  3. Exit your browser and run the downloaded self-extracting file. Follow the installation instructions.  It is recommended you install in the default location.  Do not install JAVA into your browsers plug-in directory.
  4. When installed, go to the Windows control panel and click on the JAVA Icon.
  5. From the resulting dialogue, set all features as you see fit.
  6. From your browser, make sure JAVA is enabled

LINUX SYSTEMS

JAVA should be available on your distribution CD as an .rpm (Redhat-based systems) or .deb (Debian based systems) package. Install it with your favorite package manager. Alternatively, you can download a .bin file from the Sun JAVA site. If you are updating an existing installation, you might consider uninstalling the older version of JAVA first. However, you can run multiple versions of JAVA on the same machine if you desire. If you have any questions, your webmaster has experience with .rpm and .deb systems and can probably offer some advice.

CHECK INSTALLATION (All browsers and platforms)

If you want to check your installation, access the Region V website. The menu system and the clock on that site require JAVA and will work only if the JAVA Plug-in is properly installed. If they do not operate, check your installation.

You can also click here for full documentation for JRE 6.

If, after you've tried the above, you still have trouble installing the JAVA plug-in, contact the webmaster at russell.marcks@sinclair.edu
